At first light on the 19th 9 Brigade began an operation to secure a bridgehead over the canal on the left of 8 Brigade’s sector, and the Battalion’s task was to keep the enemy as closely engaged as possible on its own front. Assault boats from the Royal Engineers were brought forward under the cover of mist. By 0900 hours 9 Brigade were across and over 500 yards deep in the nearby woods, encountering fierce opposition.

In the afternoon Lieutenant Eric Fryer, another CANLOAN officer, and the rest of 12 Platoon from B Company crossed the canal in assault boats to probe enemy positions. The enemy, well-hidden, opened fire with various small arms, holing and sinking most of the craft, wounding many and killing eleven men. Fryer and the few that landed were taken prisoner. The first action in Holland had not got off to the best start, which is perhaps why this action was omitted from the Battalion War Diary.
